Kansas (2-4) vs. Texas Tech 4-2) Game Preview
One Reason Why Kansas Will Win
Kansas hasn’t been miserable. It might not be winning lately – going 0-3 in Big 12 play – but it’s showing more pop.
So how did it beat Central Michigan and Rutgers earlier in the season – beyond Central Michigan and Rutgers being awful at college football?
Lots and lots of turnovers, and more specifically, turnover margin.
The Jayhawks really are better than they’ve been over the last several seasons, but they still can’t keep up or hold up with the decent teams without a whole slew of breaks. They didn’t just force 12 takeaways in those two wins; they were +12 in turnover margin.
They hung around with West Virginia two weeks ago with four takeaways, including three picks of Will Grier. However, the turnovers weren’t happening in the second half, and the Mountaineers pulled away. Turning it over three times didn’t help.
Texas Tech hasn’t had a turnover problem, but it was a -3 in the loss to West Virginia a few weeks ago. Somehow, the Jayhawks have to generate pressure and force a slew of big mistakes to stay alive.
One Reason Why Texas Tech Will Win
The Red Raiders just showed they could beat a solid team without the passing game to be clicking.
With star quarterback Alan Bowman out as he continued to try getting back from a collapsed lung, and Jett Duffey stepped in, ran well, threw enough, and changed around the offense a bit. Even when Bowman is back and healthy, the Red Raider O now has a weapon to fill in.
Crank up a little bit of offense, don’t feed the Kansas takeaway beast, and all should be fine. The Jayhawks just don’t have the offense to keep up.
Best of all against TCU, the Red Raider defense picked a gem.
It’s still last in the Big 12 in yards allowed, and it gives up a whole slew of yards, but it stuffed the Horned Frog ground game and generated solid pressure throughout.
If that defense shows up again, and the offense is simply okay, there won’t be any issues.
What’s Going To Happen
Kansas has had two weeks off to rest up and prepare, and it’s overdue for one of those weird games that it rises up and rocks when no one is paying attention. The passing game should get moving just a little bit, but …
The O just won’t move the chains enough.
The Red Raiders are playing well, and now they’re finding ways to win. It’ll take them a half to get everything going offensively, but the defense will do its part for another week.
The Jayhawks will move the chains, but they’ll come up with too many empty drives. Texas Tech pulls away in the third quarter.
