Texas Tech (5-2) vs. Iowa State (3-3) Game Preview
One Reason Why Texas Tech Will Win
Texas Tech might just have the antidote to the Iowa State defense.
It didn’t have it last year in the 31-13 loss, but this season, the key to getting by the Cyclones can be a quick-hitting passing game that overcomes the pass rush.
Iowa State’s D against West Virginia jumping on Will Grier’s head, coming up with seven sacks a week after hitting Oklahoma State with seven.
Texas Tech’s O line has only allowed 11 sacks, mostly because of the offensive style that gets the ball out of the quarterback’s hands.
Back after getting knocked out against West Virginia with a collapsed lung, Alan Bowman went off on Kansas, completing 78% of his passes for 408 yards and three scores with a pick. The Iowa State secondary has been terrific so far – it was outstanding against Will Grier – but it’ll give up completions.
Bowman should hit 70% of his throws and at least keep things moving a bit.
One Reason Why Iowa State Will Win
Purdymania is running wild.
It really is amazing. Iowa State didn’t have any offensive pop, the running game wasn’t working, and the team averaged just 17.5 points over the first four games. This was going to be a plucky team that relied on a good defense and great coaching, and then …
Brock Purdy happened.
The true freshman stepped in against Oklahoma State, and he went off against the Cowboys and against West Virginia, completing 75% of his passes for close to 12 yards per throw with seven touchdowns and two picks.
He’s adding a rushing element, too – with 122 yards and a score so far – and his emergence has taken the pressure off of David Montgomery, who ripped up the Mountaineers for 189 yards for his third straight 100-yard game – when healthy.
And now the team has had time to rest up with two weeks off.
What’s Going To Happen
Texas Tech is the real deal. The defense has been terrific – allowing 17 points or fewer in three of the last four games – and the offense is a machine with Bowman able to bomb away.
But Iowa State has it figured out.
The defense has been playing at a whole other level over the last few games, and Purdy appears to be just that good.
The Cyclones will get the Texas Tech off the field by allowing Bowman to complete short passes, but without the yards after the catch. Purdy won’t go off, but he and Montgomery will be good enough to keep up when the Red Raider offense works.
It’ll be a fun, tight game that keeps the Cyclone momentum going.
