10 Best ATS Picks So Far: 38-33-1

Starting with a few that didn’t quite make the cut, but are still spicy …

Texas A&M -2 over South Carolina
Charlotte +7.5 over WKU
Baylor +14 over Texas

10. Toledo at Eastern Michigan

LINE: Toledo -2.5, o/u: 65
ATS PICK: Toledo

This is part trend pick, part Toledo Is Getting Its Guy Back pick.

The Rockets have been awful defensively, but they have the best receiving corps in the MAC – or, a close second behind Buffalo, when Anthony Johnson is healthy – and now QB Mitchell Guadagni is returning.

But more than that, Eastern Michigan is deep in the midst of a brutal trend, losing its last four games by seven points or fewer – none of those, though, were by fewer than three points.

Toledo has the ability to turn the lights out on the Eagles is that passing game clicks, but considering what has happened over the last five EMU games – including the 20-19 win over Purdue – it’ll be a tight game, and the Rockets are going to win by three.

9. New Mexico at Colorado State

LINE: PICK, o/u: 64
ATS PICK: New Mexico

It still seems weird to pick New Mexico to do anything great, considering it was SO miserable last season and it’s now without its starting quarterback – Tevaka Tuioti – for the year, but it’s just killing teams.

The Lobos have tweaked the offense, and it’s really, really working. That includes the first few drives against Wisconsin, and the Tuioti got knocked out for the game. Against everyone else, New Mexico has scored 42 points or more.

The Liberty loss was concerning, and Colorado State got the O going against San Jose State last week, but this is a mega-flaky Ram team with no defense. So far, Colorado State has an epic comeback run win over Arkansas, and a win over San Jose State, who has yet to win a game.

8. Southern Miss at North Texas

LINE: North Texas -9.5, o/u: 54.5
ATS PICK: Southern Miss

To be perfectly blunt, this is a leap of faith.

If North Texas figures it all out again, and this is the offense that blew up for 46 points or more in each of the first four games … uh-oh. However, the O has fallen flat over the last two weeks, with just 27 points against Louisiana Tech and then 27 more against UTEP. And now, a solid Southern Miss team is getting 9.5.

The Golden Eagles only have wins over Jackson State and Rice, but it was able to hang around a little bit with Auburn two weeks ago, it’s great at controlling the clock, and it’s rested. North Texas wins, but USM gets the passing game going, and does just  enough to get in under the number.

7. Virginia Tech at North Carolina

LINE: Virginia Tech -6, o/u: 58.5
ATS PICK: Virginia Tech

North Carolina had the one weird aberration win over Pitt when everything clicked. Even with two weeks off to prepare, you’re asking for everything to start to come together.

Virginia Tech might be overrated, overblown, and getting way too much love for that Florida State win to start the season, but it’s also throwing the ball well with Ryan Willis stepping in for Josh Jackson, and that UNC offense has only scored more than 20 points since.

Under Justin Fuente, this is the type of team that appears to be capable of rallying back in a hurry – the 31-14 win over Duke after the Old Dominion debacle was terrific.

Put it this way. If Virginia Tech wins this, it’s going to be by a touchdown.

6. Ole Miss vs. Arkansas

LINE: Ole Miss -6.5, o/u: 67
ATS PICK: Ole Miss

The Ole Miss offense didn’t work … against Alabama and LSU.

Is Arkansas Alabama or LSU? Nope.

The Rebels have averaged 57.5 points per game in their four wins, and Arkansas has get to score more than 31 against any FBS team. And those 31? Garbage time last week against Alabama.

The Hogs are playing better. They gave Texas A&M a fight – and lost by seven. They hung around for a bit against Auburn, and lost by 31.

You’re asking Ole Miss to beat Arkansas by a touchdown. Go.
