Kansas 27, TCU 26
What Happened: Pooka Williams came up with a 28-yard touchdown with just over six minutes to go for his second score of the day on the way to a shocking Kansas win over TCU.
The Horned Frogs got up 10-7 in the first half on a Michael Collins 56-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Reagor, and they stayed in the game on two Collins scoring runs. They had one final chance to survive with a late drive inside the Kansas ten, but lost a fumble, the Jayhawks recovered, and closed it out by taking a safety with one second to play.
What Mattered: Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Kansas needed them, and it only came up with two. Fortunately, one came just as the Horned Frogs looked like they were about to go ahead. The Jayhawks didn’t turn the ball over.
– TCU was able to move the ball with Collins under center. He threw for 351 yards and a touchdown with a pick, and he ran for 33 yards and two scores, but all the yards didn’t lead to enough points. Kansas hung around, hung around, hung around … and it turned out to be enough.
– The Horned Frogs converted 8-of-12 third down chances, and they bombed away, but … Kansas was able to stay in the game by moving the chains. The TCU defense had a hard time getting off the field as KU QB Peyton Bender was great on third downs, overcoming a bad day from the ground game.
Thoughts: TCU was already having a rough run, but this is truly disastrous. There’s no excuse when it comes to the quarterback situation and losing Shawn Robinson – Michael Collins played well. The offense did just fine, but when you’re in the midst of a bad run, things just don’t go your way. That’s what happened. TCU outplayed Kansas, but …
– Now, with this loss, that’s five losses in the last six games – going bowling might be a stretch. The Horned Frogs have to win three of their last four games against Kansas State, at West Virginia, at Baylor and Oklahoma State.
– Was this a job-saver for David Beatty? Just when it seemed like Kansas didn’t have any hope of ever turning any sort of a corner … boom. It’ll still be tough to get another win with Iowa State, at Kansas State, at Oklahoma and at Texas to close, but the program got to have a little fun for at least one Big 12 week.
