Rutgers (1-5) vs. Maryland (3-2) Game Preview
One Reason Why Rutgers Will Win
Can the Rutgers run defense hold up?
It’s had a rough run so far, but Maryland just doesn’t/can’t throw. It doesn’t have a DJ Moore or Stefon Diggs in the receiving corps, but it has a solid quarterback in Kasim Hill – it doesn’t matter.
As a team, the Terps have thrown for just 638 yards with four touchdowns and three picks. The running game has been good, but it’s spotty, going off on Bowling Green and Minnesota, and struggling against everyone else.
The Scarlet Knights have big problems with teams that can actually throw, but they’ve been fine against the offenses with the mediocre to bad passing games.
They only have to focus on one thing. Linebackers Trevor Morris and Deonte Roberts come up with lots and lots of tackles, and now they have to load up on Anthony McFarland and Ty Johnson to keep them in check.
One Reason Why Maryland Will Win
In theory, it’s simple. Load up to stop the run, make Maryland throw, win the game.
But Rutgers tried to do that against Illinois, and was hit for 330 yards and four scores.
The Scarlet Knight defense front doesn’t generate any sort of a pass rush, and it doesn’t do enough to be disruptive against the teams the commit to pounding away. Even worse, if Maryland can get up early, Rutgers can’t get back.
The RU passing game is the least efficient in college football, coming up with just three touchdown passes so far and 12 picks. Make the Scarlet Knights throw, and bad things happen.
What’s Going To Happen
Neither team has enough of an offense to make this an interesting shootout, but Rutgers hasn’t been able to show much of anything to think it can keep up if Maryland gets 20 points.
The Terps will be +3 in turnover margin turning a tight game into a blowout.
