Purdue (4-3) vs. Michigan State (4-3) Game Preview

One Reason Why Purdue Will Win

That wasn’t a fluke.

The 49-20 blasting of Ohio State was just part of an amazing run from a Purdue offense that’s figured out the passing game and continues to make it rock.

David Blough is a sharp, veteran passer who has the Jeff Brohm system down. Get the ball out of the hands in a hurry, get the ball to the playmakers in places to do things with the ball, and lots and lots of space for the guys to run in.

Over the last five games, Blough has hit the 300-yard mark four times – and threw for 296 against Boston College – with three touchdown passes in each of them.

The Michigan State secondary hasn’t been miserable, but it has a problem with decent passing games. It was okay against Penn State and Michigan over the last two weeks, and it’s been able to clamp down, but if Blough gets off to a hot start, the Spartan offensive side doesn’t have the punch or the firepower to keep up.

MSU QB Brian Lewerke has been practicing, but he banged up his shoulder in the win over Penn State, and got knocked around a bit against Michigan.

One Reason Why Michigan State Will Win

So what did Ohio State do that was so wrong against the Boilermakers?

It didn’t tackle all that well, but its linebackers were out of position way too often. The Purdue receivers were running in space – that’s the design of the Brohm attack – where the second-level options weren’t.

That’s fixable, and the MSU defense that’s been rock against the run so far should also be able to keep the big pass plays to a minimum.

The bigger key is to take control of the tempo of the game right away. MSU’s offense might not have anything working on the ground, but the O is great at owning the time of possession battle and getting teams to play at its level.

Yeah, Michigan was able to power its way to a win, but it was also close in the fourth quarter even though MSU was outmatched and wasn’t able to get anything consistently moving. However …

What’s Going To Happen

Purdue is even better at controlling the clock. As exciting as this offense is, it’s able to maintain an even tempo and it doesn’t always go at warp speed.

Michigan State, though, has an uncanny ability to handle good, effective passing games … at times.

Will it be able to rise up and rock like it did against Trace McSorley and Penn State, or will it buckle like it did against Clayton Thorson and a one-dimensional Northwestern offense?

Which Spartan team will show up?

Michigan State is beaten up, Purdue is red hot, and …

Lewerke will play, the Spartan D will pitch a gem at home, and just when you think the team is done, it’ll come up with a performance like it did against Penn State a few weeks ago and muck things up on the way to a big bounce back win.
