Purdue (2-3) vs. Illinois (3-2) Game Preview
One Reason Why Purdue Will Win
David Blough is bringing it.
After splitting time early in the season, Blough took over the quarterback job, and he has gone off for close to 1,200 yards and seven scores over the last three games. Against Nebraska, he threw for 328 yards and a touchdown a week after hitting 75% of his passes for close to 300 yards and three scores.
The Illinois secondary hasn’t been tight, allowing 200 yards or more in every game. It’ll come up with picks – with ten so far – allowing two touchdowns or more in four of the five games.
The Illinois defense isn’t awful at getting off the field, but it’s dead last in the conference in yards allowed. And now it has to deal with a rested Boilermaker team that averages close to 500 yards per game.
The Illini won’t be able to keep up.
One Reason Why Illinois Will Win
And there’s the Illinois running game.
The Illini haven’t been all that bad. They’re 3-2, and they should’ve and could’ve been 4-1, losing late to USF and with the other loss to a great Penn State team.
Granted, Illinois has gone bum-slaying, but it’s been able to run on everyone, coming up with a season-high 330 yards and four scores against Rutgers last week.
Back from injury, AJ Bush only threw for 89 yards, but he ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Purdue’s linebacking corps is playing well, and the run defense shut down Boston College a few weeks ago, but it also gave up 233 rushing yards or more in two of the last three games.
Illinois has to run for over 200 to stay in this, and it will.
What’s Going To Happen
Illinois isn’t playing all that poorly.
The defense has been under-the-radar strong, and the O line has been just okay enough to pound out the running game against this Boilermaker defensive front.
However, Illinois has to control the clock and the tempo, and that’s not going to happen.
Purdue is amazing on both sides of the ball on third downs, and it’s even better at controlling the time of possession battle. Blough will throw well enough to keep the chains moving and get the better-than-it-looks road win.
