Penn State (4-2) vs. Indiana (4-3) Game Preview
One Reason Why Penn State Will Win
Just let Indiana do its thing and dink and dunk, make the tackle, and everything will be okay.
The Hoosier passing game is accurate, but there’s not enough going on down the field, and there’s a problem when there are picks. Going back to the beginning of last season, IU is 0-5 when throwing two interceptions ore more, including last week’s loss to Iowa.
Penn State has come up with four picks over the last three games, and IU can’t handle not winning the turnover margin and taking advantage of every opportunity.
On the other side of the ball, Trace McSorley and the passing game should pick it back up after a rough pereormcane in the loss to Michigan State.
The Hoosiers hadn’t played a whole slew of good passers, and then got hammered by Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins for 455 yards and six touchdowns, and last week got hit by Iowa’s Nate Stanley for 320 yards and six scores.
Get ready for McSorley to go off, and IU not having the passing game to keep up.
One Reason Why Indiana Will Win
Yeah, Indiana might not throw the ball down the field or get a whole slew of big-time yards after the catch, but it’s effective.
The Hoosiers failed to hit 200 passing yards once, and that was because it was raining hard in the win over Virginia. Peyton Ramsey has been good at connecting on the midrange passes, hitting 68% of his throws with close to 600 yards over the last two games.
This is an explosive Penn State offense that scores in bunches, but it doesn’t care much about controlling the clock and the tempo. It’ll be up to Ramsey to keep McSorley and the Nittany Lions off the field by hitting the throws he can make on third downs.
IU is great at coming up with a whole lot of first downs, and as Michigan State showed last week in its win, if you can control the pace against Penn State, you can pull this off.
What’s Going To Happen
With all due respect to Appalachian State, remember, it’s not like Penn State has beaten anyone amazing.
Of course it’s a strong team with a whole lot of explosion and upside, but now that the Big Ten title dream is all but gone – but there’s still a long shot way of getting there – will the intensity be there?
Indiana has lost three of the last four games and can’t get the offense going enough to overcome a third quarter run Penn State will go on to pull away. It’ll be an interesting first half, and then it’ll all turn by two big scoring drives.
McSorley’s numbers will be massive.
