Path To The College Football Playoff: Who's Still Alive After Week 8? What's Going To Happen?

By

Big Ten

Iowa (6-1)

The Path to the College Football Playoff: It’s still on the table. It’s going to take some work, but it’s not as tough a path as you might think. It’s a tough road, and that’s a good thing. It”s a massive help that coming up with a victory at Purdue would be a really big deal now, and the Hawkeyes have to go to Penn State and Illinois, too.

Win out, get two Wisconsin losses – the Badgers have to go to Penn State and Northwestern – and get to the Big Ten Championship. Win that, and likely get in.

What Will Happen: It’s not crazy, but the Hawkeyes aren’t going to beat both Penn State and Purdue on the road, and they’ll be pushed by Northwestern and Nebraska at home.

Michigan (5-1)

The Path to the College Football Playoff: Unlike Ohio State and Iowa, Michigan would absolutely be a slam-dunk to get in at 12-1 no matter what. There might be some concerns if an SEC East team goes 12-1 with an SEC Championship win over unbeaten Alabama, but … nah. Michigan would find its way in.

Even if Notre Dame is 12-0, 12-1 Michigan could boast that its only loss is on the road in the opener to the Irish. It would get the call over a second SEC team and the Big 12 champ. At worst, 12-1 gets Michigan the No. 4 spot.

What Will Happen: Michigan will get to the Rose Bowl, but after beating Penn State, Rutgers and Indiana, it’ll lose a heartbreaker at Ohio State.

Ohio State (5-1)

The Path to the College Football Playoff: EVERYTHING IS FINE. Realistically, Notre Dame will lose a game, and/or there won’t be a viable second SEC team.

Win out, beat Michigan along the way, take out Wisconsin, Iowa or Northwestern in the Big Ten championship – or, better yet, avenge the loss to Purdue – and no way, no how does a 12-1 Big Ten champion Ohio State get left out. That would make it three straight years the Big Ten champ doesn’t get in … it’s not going to happen.

What Will Happen: Last week right here, you were warned that Ohio State was going to lose once to someone weird – like Purdue. That’s out of the way, and now the Buckeyes will roll on through the rest of their schedule, get to 12-1 with a Big Ten championship, and get into the CFP as the No. 3 seed.
