Path To The College Football Playoff: Who's Still Alive After Week 8? What's Going To Happen?

By

Big 12

Oklahoma (6-1)

The Path to the College Football Playoff: Everything is back on track now. The defense might have allowed 27 to TCU, but that offense continues to be amazing. Win out, get a Notre Dame loss, or hope for a two-loss Big Ten champ, and get in. Even if it goes 12-1 and avenges the loss to Texas in the Big 12 Championship, it might need a wee bit of help.

What Will Happen: Oklahoma will roll through Kansas State, at Texas Tech, Oklahoma State and Kansas to set up the showdown at West Virginia to end the regular season. It’ll win, take down Texas in the Big 12 title game, and get into the CFP after Notre Dame loses.

Texas (6-1)

The Path to the College Football Playoff: The Maryland loss will be forgiven. It was at the beginning of the season, and if it gets through the slate with 12 straight wins, all should be fine. However, there might be a problem if Ohio State annihilates the Terps on the road in mid-November. The Longhorns have to take care of home. Win out, look good doing it, and beat Oklahoma again. That should get it done.

What Will Happen: The Longhorns will lose at Texas Tech and/or to Oklahoma in the Big 12 Championship. They’ll get to the Sugar Bowl, but they’ll just miss out on the big fun.

West Virginia (5-1)

The Path to the College Football Playoff: Win out, get some help. The problem for the Mountaineers will be the numbers. By not playing the NC State game, at best they can finish 11-1. 12-0 Notre Dame would be in, and so would 12-1 Ohio State, Michigan or Iowa. However, if they close out with wins over Texas on the road, TCU, at Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, and then with a Big 12 title victory, the committee will fall in love.

What Will Happen: Nah. they’re not going to get through the November gauntlet unscathed. The 30-14 loss at Iowa State – and missing NC State – will be too much to overcome even if they do take the Big 12 title.

NEXT: Big Ten
