3. Arizona 24, California 17
This doesn’t work for Cal if Brandon McIlwain has turnover problems.
The Bears need a spark offensively, and McIlwain is a playmaker who can ignite the attack. But he also gave up two interceptions late to Scottie Young, ruining an otherwise good day.
McIlwain threw for 315 yards and ran for 107 yards and two scores, but it all fell flat because of all of the giveaways.
Arizona didn’t do anything great. Khalil Tate threw for 141 yards and a score, and he ran for 40 more. But the ground game didn’t do anything.
The offense only managed 265 yards of total offense, the team committed ten penalties, and the two turnovers didn’t help, but Cal’s 13 penalties were a disaster and …
Yeah, the turnovers.
Eventually, Cal will get everything right.
The defense did a good job, and McIlwain really was fun. Once the mistakes stop all the way around, the wins will follow. Arizona still has to prove it can do something consistently well.
But for now, Kevin Sumlin and the Cats will be happy just to take the win.
