Oklahoma State (4-1) vs. Iowa State (1-3) Game Preview
One Reason Why Iowa State Will Win
David Montgomery is getting going.
The Iowa State running game hasn’t been anything special so far – the entire offense hasn’t been anything special so far – but Montgomery has been able to carry the attack and keep the team in games.
He ran for 107 yards against Akron, and 101 against TCU – he’s grinding it out. Iowa State needs that – it has to control the clock and keep the game slow and go, if possible.
Oklahoma State doesn’t do much to control the clock – holding the ball for just 26:36 a game – and it’s starting to run the ball a bit more, too. Iowa State has to keep this game in the 20s, and if Montgomery can get into a groove, that will happen.
One Reason Why Oklahoma State Will Win
Iowa State has no explosion whatsoever. The passing game is averaging just ten yards per completion, Montgomery is having a hard time tearing off big runs for an offense averaging just 17.5 points per game.
Not helping the Cyclone cause is a terror of a Cowboy pass rush that’s living behind the line. Jordan Brailford has seven of the team’s 24 sacks – the team leads the nation in sacks per game.
Get up early, and this thing is over.
The Cowboys know the passing game game can click – it’s 15th in the nation in yards per completion – and now they have Justice Hill going. Limited over the first four games, it was his game against Kansas with 31 carries for 189 yards and a score in the blowout win.
Come up with a few early scores, and rely on the star running back to close it out.
What’s Going To Happen
Iowa State really is good at mucking it up and keeping games from exploding, but on the road, there’s going to be a problem against all the OSU parts. It’s a bad blend of deep passing game and aggressive defense for the Cyclones to deal with.
This won’t get out of hand, but Oklahoma State will come up with a strong all-around performance.
