Ohio State (7-0) vs. Purdue (3-3) Game Preview
One Reason Why Ohio State Will Win
When the offense turns it on, thanks for playing.
Yeah, it’s been a bit sluggish at times, and yeah, it hasn’t put together a full sixty minutes. But once the game starts to kick in, that’s when Dwayne Haskins goes off.
Tua Tagovailoa might have won the Heisman already, but in a whole slew of ways, Haskins has been every bit as good.
After mounting the comeback over Penn State to pull that out of the fire, he ripped up Indiana for 455 yards and six scores, and followed it up with a 42-yard day against Minnesota. TCU and Penn State are the only games Haskins hasn’t connected on over 70% of his passes.
Purdue’s pass defense overall has been fine, but it was ripped apart by Missouri’s Drew Lock for 572 yards, and Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez threw for 328 yards.
Haskins should be in for another 400-yard day, especially if this gets into a shootout, because …
One Reason Why Purdue Will Win
The Purdue offense has kicked it in.
Indiana and TCU were both able to throw for over 300 yards against the Ohio State secondary, and Trace McSorley was amazing both on the ground and through the air in Penn State’s near-miss loss to the Buckeyes.
And now, in West Lafayette, Ohio State’s defense is about to be bombed on.
David Blough is a veteran passer who’s been as hot as any passer over the last four games, throwing for over 1,500 yards with ten touchdowns and just two picks. This is the game to let it rip.
But it’s not just Blough. At this point in the season, the Purdue defense has filled in the parts, too.
Granted, it got ripped up by Lock and Mizzou, but it’s been a rock over the last three games and has been amazing on third downs. The Boilermakers lead the Big Ten in third down defense, and it’s keeping passer under 60% completion rate over the last three games.
Yeah, Haskins is amazing, but the two times he didn’t hit the 70% mark were the two road games.
What’s Going To Happen
You know that moment in the season when the truly wacky curveball comes, like Iowa’s win over Ohio State last year? There were a whole slew of those games last weekend, and …
It’s not going to happen in West Lafayette on Saturday night, but it’ll be a fun and wild shootout with both passing games trading big plays.
In the end, Ohio State’s offensive playmakers will be too good when they need to turn it on, but Blough and company will make this a blast.
