Notre Dame (5-0) vs. Virginia Tech (3-1) Game Preview
One Reason Why Notre Dame Will Win
The Irish have their backfield guys in place, and it shows.
It took a few games to get there, but against Wake Forest and Stanford, the offense discovered what Ian Book could do. And then came the running back they needed.
The explosive element was missing from the attack, and that’s where Dexter Williams kicked in. Out for the first four games, he stepped in and hit the Cardinal for 161 yards and a score on 21 carries.
Meanwhile, Book has been almost flawless, completing 74% of his passes so far with six touchdowns.
For all the love thrown at the Virginia Tech defense, it’s been awful against the pass. The Old Dominion debacle was the most noticeable problem, but everyone has come up with well over 200 yards through the air so far.
Now with Williams, the Irish have some balance, too.
One Reason Why Virginia Tech Will Win
The Old Dominion game was a wake-up call, and overall, it might have turned out to be a good thing.
The Hokies sharpened up in a hurry last week against Duke, and they even showed they could win without starting QB Josh Jackson, who was out with a broken leg.
Kansas transfer Ryan Willis stepped in and cooly hit the previously unbeaten Blue Devils for 332 yards and three scores. He’s going to have to be just as strong this week against an Irish pass defense that’s been fine, but gave up over 300 yards to Vanderbilt and – despite all the ripping apart of the Wolverines – 249 to Michigan.
To beat the Irish, the Hokies can’t beat themselves. They lost one pick against Old Dominion, one fumble against William & Mary, and that’s been it. They’re not turning the ball over, and they’re not giving away easy points.
If the nation’s fourth-best run defense can keep Williams in check, and if Book can be limited when he has to move the chains, Virginia Tech can pull this off.
What’s Going To Happen
Is this it? Is this the one shot someone has of stopping the Irish run to the College Football Playoff?
That’s being a bit overblown, but this might just be the toughest task the rest of the way for a Notre Dame team that’s rolling at the right time.
The Hokies will be inspired at home, but the Irish defense will rise up early and make up for an offense that’ll sputter a bit early on.
Book will be great against the Virginia Tech secondary, and in a strange twist, Notre Dame will win the special teams battle and own the field position.
It’ll be a survive and advance game, but 6-0 is 6-0.
