Pitt (3-3) vs. Notre Dame (6-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Pitt Will Win
Could the win over Syracuse be the moment when this whole thing turns around?
The flakiest of the flaky, Pitt is just the type of team and program to struggle against a North Carolina this year, and then get by the Orange – just like last year when it lost to the Tar Heels and then tagged Miami with its first loss.
So how did the Panthers get the job done against SU? The running game went off, rushing for 265 yards and three scores with Qadree Ollison rumbling for 192 yards and a touchdown.
This is a decent team in terms of time of possession, and while it’s a bit hit-or-miss, that ground attack really can take over games for stretches. Pitt has to be better at generating pressure to get to Ian Book and force him to screw up, and it has to milk the clock.
The Irish have shown at home this year that they can bog down and play down to their competition, but …
One Reason Why Notre Dame Will Win
They might have the best running back in college football at the moment.
It took just two games, but Dexter Williams is the team’s top rusher with 339 yards and four scores, tearing off 161 yards and a touchdown against Stanford, and destroying Virginia Tech for 178 yards and three scores.
He’s running like a determined home run hitter with something to prove – which is what he is.
Meanwhile, Book hasn’t gone Tagovailoa, but he’s been brilliant since taking over the quarterback reigns. He’s hitting over 73% of his passes, he’s pushing the ball down the field, and he’s opening things up for Williams to make big things happen.
Pitt doesn’t have the passing pop to keep up. It is possible to throw on the Irish secondary, but Kenny Pickett hasn’t shown the upside or potential to do it. He has yet to throw for 200 yards this season, and he’s been good for a pick in every game but one.
What’s Going To Happen
Notre Dame isn’t so rock-solid good that it can just show up and run the table, and Pitt is strong enough to potentially pull a shocker out of nowhere, but …
The Irish run isn’t ending here, with the sharp offense getting out to a hot start and the defense eating up the Pitt running game. It’ll be up to Pickett to make this a battle, and he won’t be able to do it for a full four quarters.
