Northern Illinois (4-3) vs. BYU (4-3) Game Preview
What’s Going To Happen
Call this a measuring stick moment for both programs. Neither one has been consistent, and the both had major flaws, but this is a true toss up that each has to look at as a win.
BYU has had two weeks to rest up after rolling Hawaii in a blowout, getting a decent-enough performance from freshman QB Zach Wilson. However, it was the running game – freshman Lopini Katoa barreled for a big day – that got the Cougars by.
And now they all get to deal with the Northern Illinois pass rush.
Very, very quietly, Sutton Smith is putting up another amazing season, cranking up seven sacks for a D that leads the MAC in tackles for loss and sacks. However, there’s no passing game to help the cause, the running game isn’t good enough, and every week has been a grind.
However, the Huskies are on a three game winning streak, and so far, the only losses have been to Iowa, Utah, and Florida State – no shame there.
NIU still won’t get any offense going, but the defense will keep the Cougars in check. However, the lack of a running game or downfield passing attack will be too much to overcome on the road.
This will be a tough watch, but it’ll be a close four quarter battle with BYU getting out alive. Wilson won’t be great, but he’ll make a few key throws down the field that NIU’s Marcus Jones won’t.
