Maryland (3-1) vs. Michigan (4-1) Game Preview
One Reason Why Maryland Will Win
If the Wolverines come out with the same performance they did in Evanston, they’re in trouble.
Yeah, they beat Northwestern 20-17, but the 11 penalties for 100 yards were killers – they were flagged 13 times two games earlier against SMU – and the offense overall was off.
Maryland might be struggling in a slew of ways, but it’s great on third downs, keeping teams just 29% on the big downs – the best in the Big Ten.
The Terps are doing a terrific job against the run, stuffing Minnesota for just 94 yards per week and keeping teams this year to just 2.7 yards per carry – it’s holding up well so far and should be able to force Shea Patterson to win this. He’s been good overall, but he’s been inconsistent with just one touchdown pass and 316 yards in the last two games.
One Reason Why Michigan Will Win
The Maryland run defense is great. The Michigan run defense is special.
Lost in the struggles against Northwestern – and the loss to Notre Dame to start the season – is a run D that’s getting better and better from its already lofty status. The opposing rushing totals have dropped in each of the last five games, holding Northwestern to just 28 yards after stuffing Nebraska for 39.
The Terps don’t have to run to win, but that’s the preferred mode of transportation. When the passing attack has had to come through, it hasn’t. Temple stopped Maryland from running, and the passing game couldn’t respond with just 63 yards and two picks.
With the Big Ten’s worst passing game, and without much downfield pop when things do click, this is a bad, bad fit for Maryland.
What’s Going To Happen
After a sluggish game against Northwestern, Michigan comes back roaring with a sharper performance from the start. Shea Patterson will lead the way to two early touchdown drives, and that should be it. The Wolverines will be able to coast from there.
