Michigan State (3-2) vs. Penn State (4-1) Game Preview

One Reason Why Michigan State Will Win

Okay … enough is enough.

The run defense continues to be outstanding – it’s No. 1 in the nation – and the offense is strong at controlling the clock. It has pieces in place, it has the things that normally make Michigan State, Michigan State … and it’s just not working.

However, it’s not going to take that much for the Spartans to go from mediocre and losing, to mucking it up and being just strong enough to beat Penn State.

The Spartans will own the time of possession battle – Penn State will hold the ball for around 27 minutes. There’s no running game, but the passing attack is strong enough to open it up when needed. And the defense should be just good enough to come up with stops against an explosive Nittany Lion passing game that misses on too many throws.

And this needs to be the Brian Lewerke game.

He pulled off the win over Penn State last year with 400 yards and two scores, and even in the loss last week to Northwestern, he threw for 329 yards.

However …

One Reason Why Penn State Will Win

The Spartan secondary isn’t there.

Yes, Michigan State’s run defense has been terrific, but that’s because everyone is throwing the ball.

MSU came into the Northwestern game struggling against decent passing games, and then it got hit by 373 yards and three scores in the loss. The secondary continues to but a takeaway machine – with two picks in four of the five games – but it also gets hit for lots and lots of yards.

Trace McSorley has yet to throw for 300 yards, and he’s only hitting 53% of his throws, but he’s not giving the ball away with just two interceptions so far, and he’s amazing at keeping the offense moving.

And yes, the MSU run defense has been amazing – no one has come up with more than 63 yards so far – but it also hasn’t dealt with anyone who can run all that well. Penn State will test that – it’s rushed for 200 yards or more with 21 scores so far.

What’s Going To Happen

The Nittany Lions are rested, and they should be ready to gear it back up again after the heart-wrenching loss to Ohio State two weeks ago. However, they’re about to get into a shoving match with a desperate Michigan State team that’s way overdue to start playing up to its potential.

The Spartans are too shaky in too many areas, and the Penn State offense is a machine, but Lewerke and McSorley are about to put on a show.

They’ll both throw for close to 300 yards, but Penn State will show off just enough of a running game to get by in a fun battle that shows that, yeah, the Spartans are pretty good.

Just not good enough to get through a nasty road game like this.
