Michigan State (5-3) vs. Maryland (5-3) Game Preview
One Reason Why Michigan State Will Win
Not to put a football spin on real world issues, but …
Anything interesting happening with the Maryland coaching situation lately?
There’s certainly going to be a wee bit of a focus issue with the Terps.
Michigan State showed last week against Purdue that 1) it’s style and formula really does work, and 2) Michigan is really that good. The Spartans were able to get by Penn State on the road and shut down the Boilermaker offense that ripped up Ohio State.
And now it gets to face a one-dimensional Terp attack that threw well against Illinois last week, but won’t get it done this week.
It is possible for teams to throw on the MSU secondary, but that’s only for those who can actually complete a forward pass on a regular basis. The Spartans aren’t Illinois; they’re not going to let the Maryland offense do much of anything.
The Terps are dead last in the Big Ten in passing. Michigan State is No. 1 in the nation against the run.
It’s a bad overall mix for Maryland.
One Reason Why Maryland Will Win
Again, it’s not right to put a real issue into a football analysis, but this team and these players have done a great job under trying circumstances all season long.
No, Maryland isn’t going to be able to run amok on the Michigan State defense, but the Spartans aren’t going to show up and run away with a big offensive performance – that’s not what they do.
Kasim Hill hasn’t been a bomber this season, but last week against Illinois he connected on 11-of-19 passes for 265 yards and three scores. He showed against Texas that he can throw, and this week, he might have to open it up a bit.
It’s not like the Michigan State offense is explosive – the game will be kept in the 20s, at most.
Drag it out, keep it close, and win the turnover battle to get that one big play to turn the tide – the Terps can do that.
They lead the Big Ten in turnover margin.
What’s Going To Happen
The Michigan State defense is going to rise up and come though in a low-scoring tough road game against a motivated team.
But the Terps are going to be fantastic.
The DJ Durkin circus – and the firing on Halloween night – might be swirling all around this game, but watch out for the Terp players to come up with something amazing.
They’re not going to open up the offense, and they’re going to struggle to keep the chains moving, but the defense will keep the Spartan ground game under wraps, and Rocky Lombardi isn’t going to throw for 300 yards again like he did against the Boilermakers.
Hill will be great on third downs, the big plays down the field will be there, and at home, Maryland will pull it off.
Without DJ Durkin on the sidelines.
