Miami (5-1) vs. Virginia (3-2) Game Preview

One Reason Why Miami Will Win

The pass rush and the takeaways keep on rolling.

Virginia’s offensive line has a hard time keeping good, aggressive defenses out of the backfield, and QB Bryce Perkins takes a whole slew of sacks. Virginia, welcome to the Miami defensive front.

When absolutely needed, the Hurricane D changed everything around against Florida State with key takeaways starting with several big plays in the backfield. The Canes have come up with double-digit tackles for loss in each of their last five games, taking over the game with a season-high six sacks.

Virginia has a big, big problem inside the 20, scoring an ACC-worst 70% of the time in the red zone. It has to come through with points in every opportunity, and as Miami has proven, on the big, money downs, here comes the thunder from Joe Jackson and the defensive front.

One Reason Why Virginia Will Win

The Miami offense continues to be too inconsistent.

The running game didn’t go anywhere against Florida State, and even though N’Kosi Perry threw four touchdown passes, he needed the defense to set up most of the big plays and moments.

Turnovers aren’t a massive problem for the Cavaliers, and they’re great on third downs and terrific at controlling the clock. With two weeks off to prepare, and with Miami coming off the tough, emotional win over FSU, Virginia is the far fresher team.

This has to be Bryce Perkins’ game. He has to be good under pressure, not force any throws that aren’t there, and use his mobility to set up manageable second and third down plays. He can do all of that – he needs to control the clock and the game from the start.

What’s Going To Happen

Virginia gave Miami fits for close to three quarters last season before everything changed on the way to a 44-28 Hurricane win. Can Bronco Mendenhall take the two weeks to figure out how to deal with the Miami defense for a full four quarters this year?

Virginia will make it a fight, but in the end, the Hurricane defensive line will come through when it has to.

The Miami offense will sputter and struggle a bit too much, but it’ll come up with another decent fourth quarter to survive. Virginia will have its chances, though – it’ll stall on too many decent drives.
