Miami (5-2) vs. Boston College (5-2) Game Preview
One Reason Why Miami Will Win
It’s going to be pass rush vs. pass rush, and Miami’s is slightly better.
The Boston College offense is turned into an efficient machine, but that comes to a halt against a Cane defense that’s had a few weeks to recharge the nation’s best defense at getting into the backfield.
All of the big plays behind the line have helped the run defense that’s allowed only one team – North Carolina in an ugly blowout – to do much so far, and overall, it’s allowing fewer than three yards per carry.
These two teams do a whole lot of the same things. They can both be disruptive on D, they can both take the ball away, and neither team can come up with anything positive with its punting game.
But the Canes are better at controlling the tempo and the clock because they’re far better at getting the defense off the field. Miami is No. 1 in the country in third down stops.
When they make a huge thing happen in the backfield, that’s usually it for the drive. However …
One Reason Why Boston College Will Win
Boston College has a quarterback it can rely on. Miami doesn’t.
Star RB AJ Dillon is expected to be back after missing a few weeks – the Eagles have their guy back to revolve the offense around. However, others were able to pick up the slack, and QB Anthony Brown was terrific at times.
He didn’t bomb away – he has one 300-yard game on the year against Wake Forest – but he was sharp as a tack against Louisville and hasn’t made mistakes.
You can’t succumb to the pressure Miami brings and start making big mistakes. Brown threw four picks against Purdue, and none against anyone else.
And then there’s the Miami quarterback situation.
Malik Rosier was mediocre – to be nice – got benched, and N’Kosi Perry stepped in. The super-recruit got the chance to show what he could do, and … phhhhhffffffft. The air went out of the balloon.
Perry threw four touchdown passes against Florida State, but he came back to complete just 3-of-6 passes for 20 yards and two picks in the loss to Virginia. Rosier threw for 170 yards and an interception against the Cavs.
Rosier is the safer option, but … again, Boston College isn’t dealing with drama.
What’s Going To Happen
With two weeks off to prepare, which team will show up?
Will Miami overcome its quarterback issues with a. great defensive performance, or will this be when Boston College gets to make a massive Friday night statement at home?
It’s a Friday night game. In October. In Boston. It’s supposed to be around 87-degrees in Miami, but in Chestnut Hill, the Canes have to be ready to play in the 40s.
Strange things always tend to happen on Friday night games. The Miami defense might be a whole lot stronger, and the quarterback issue is being overblown, this will be BC’s night on national TV.
The combination of Brown and Dillon will work, and the Eagles will bring a little D of their own.
