Iowa State 30, West Virginia 14

There was absolutely nothing fluky about this. Iowa State rolled out and ripped apart West Virginia with a performance of total and complete domination. The offense was amazing, but the defense was the real star, holding Will Grier to just 100 yards and the Mountaineer offense to just 152 yards. How?

JaQuan Bailey and the Cyclone defense played with their hair on fire. The Iowa State D came up with seven sacks – Bailey getting two of them – coming up with stop after stop behind the line. West Virginia converted just 1-of-10 third down tries and Grier never had time to push anything down the field.

Oh yeah, the Iowa State offense. In his second game after taking over, Brock Purdy was brilliant, completing 18-of-25 passes for 254 yards and three score and a pick, and he ran for 39 yards. David Montgomery also helped the cause with his best performance of the year, running for 189 yards and a score. It all worked.

So now what for the Mountaineers? How do they pick up the pieces? They get next weekend off before hosting Baylor at home on a Thursday night game, and then comes the gauntlet, going to Texas, facing TCU, dealing with Oklahoma State on the road and facing Oklahoma. The Big 12 title is still there for the taking, but there’s no more margin for error.

Iowa State is at it again. Matt Campbell keeps pressing his reputation for being able to beat superstar Big 12 teams, and now the team gets two weeks off to rest of and get ready for Texas Tech. With Kansas and Baylor to follow, the Cyclones need to go on a three game run to lock up bowl eligibility. Winning out isn’t a crazy thought – they should be the favorites in every game the rest of the way except for the date with the Red Raiders.
