Indiana (4-4) v. Minnesota (3-4) Game Preview
One Reason Why Indiana Will Win
The Minnesota defense has gone bye-bye.
After allowing just 27 points in the first three games, the Gophers have been tattooed in Big Ten play, allowing 42 points or more to everyone but Ohio State – the Buckeyes came up with 30 as it sleepwalked through the win.
The secondary hasn’t been able to do neared enough throughout the year, but especially in the last three games, allowing over 1,000 yards and ten touchdowns with a pick.
Worse yet, Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins and Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez took target practice, combining to connect on 58-of-74 passes – 78%.
There’s a Gopher pass rush, and the tackling isn’t awful, but the coverage just isn’t there.
Indiana isn’t going to start bombing away, but Peyton Ramsey has been sharp, connecting on 73% of his throws over the last two games and throwing for 236 yards or more in each of the las six outings.
He’ll dink and dunk the Gophers to death.
One Reason Why Minnesota Will Win
The Gophers need a few breaks.
The offense has been okay lately. It might not be consistent, but it’s able to get moving a wee bit while the defensive side struggles way too much. Against IU, and to break through this ugly streak, the takeaways have to come.
The Hoosiers might be great at coming up with takeaways, but the offense will give them up, turning it over two times or more in each of the last five games and 11 times over the stretch.
On the other side of the ball, the IU pass defense hasn’t gotten of the bus over the last three games. Minnesota might have problems in the secondary, but the Hoosiers have it worse, getting rocked for over 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns over the last three games.
Zack Annexstad got banged up against Nebraska, but Tanner Morgan stepped in and was fine, throwing for over 200 yards and running a little bit. No matter who’s under center needs to have a big day.
What’s Going To Happen
Both teams are having massive issues at the moment, but Minnesota’s are bigger.
The team just can’t find any offensive consistency, mostly getting its production in blowout mode when the defense is getting rocked.
Indiana might be on an ugly losing streak, but it’s playing better than the Gophers are.
The big difference will turn out to be the turnovers. Yeah, Indiana will give them up, but it’ll also do a great job of taking the ball away. It’ll be a sloppy game, but IU will finish +1 in turnover margin.
That will be enough on the road, to go along with a slightly more effective and efficient attack.
