Illinois (3-4) vs. Maryland (4-3) Game Preview
One Reason Why Illinois Will Win
Stop the run, stop the run, stop the run.
It’s easier said then done at times against Maryland, but the passing game just isn’t getting any better.
To be fair, the Terps were playing Iowa last week in a tough, windy conditions that crushed the passing games of both teams, but that only highlighted the inability to do anything else. Iowa made a few key throws. Maryland didn’t.
It marked the third straight game and the fourth time in five games that the passing attack failed to come up with more than 85 yards, and there were just 117 yards in that fifth game against Minnesota.
Even worse for the Terps is how the offense isn’t controlling the clock even when the running game is working. Illinois isn’t great in the time of possession battle, but Maryland is dead last in the Big Ten, keeping the ball for just over 27 minutes a game.
One Reason Why Maryland Will Win
Maryland can’t throw, but Illinois can’t do it, either.
AJ Bush hasn’t been bad overall when healthy, but the Illini haven’t hit the 100-yard passing mark in two of the last three games with one touchdown pass and four picks.
Oh yes, Maryland can’t throw, but when the ground game works, it’s over. The Terps have rushed for 290 yards or more three times this year and one all three games in ugly blowouts.
The Illinois defensive front has had its moments, but it’s allowed 350 rushing yards or more in two of the last four games, and 215 or more in four of the last five games, losing all four.
Overall, these two teams are mirror images of each other in a whole lot of ways. The one key difference? Illinois is dead last in the Big Ten in pass efficiency defense, and Maryland is second. Neither team will throw well, but when the Terps do, they’ll be more effective.
What’s Going To Happen
Expect a relatively interesting, entertaining game between two teams in desperate need of a win to keep bowl hopes alive.
It’ll be one of the faster games of the day with the two running games, but Maryland will do everything Illinois will do, only a little bit better.
The rushing attack will get going again, and the offense will get moving just a wee bit more to get by and come within a win of bowl eligibility.
