Georgia Southern (5-1) vs. New Mexico State (2-5) Game Preview
What’s Going To Happen
It’s this simple: can New Mexico State stop the run?
Not even a little bit.
At least, the Aggie couldn’t handle the Louisiana ground game last week – allowing 344 yards and three scores – in the 66-38 loss. Meanwhile, Georgia Southern has rolled to a 5-1 start – with the only loss coming to Clemson – thanks to a triple-option ground attack that’s been able to take over games.
It’s gone for 295 yards or more in four of its first five games, and then it suddenly couldn’t seem to go anywhere in a 15-13 win over Texas State that was way, way, way too tight.
QB Shai Werts couldn’t break free, and the Eagles weren’t able to establish anything the consistently worked against the bad Bobcat team. However, Texas State was full of veteran linebackers who could hit – that’s what NMSU has, too.
The Aggies have a passing game that’s found something over the last few games in freshman Josh Adkins, but the Eagles have a good enough secondary to keep that in check. They’re biggest key, though, will be the time of possession battle.
NMSU doesn’t control the clock in any way, ranking dead last in college football. The Georgia Southern offense will grind out drives, and the big home runs will start coming in the second half against a gassed D.
