Colorado (5-0) vs. USC (3-2) Game Preview
One Reason Why Colorado Will Win
The Buffs proved they’re for real with a good 28-21 win over a solid Arizona State team, getting the job done by not giving up a slew of turnovers, getting a Heisman-finalist type of season out QB Steven Montez so far, and generating enough defensive pressure to screw everyone up.
One the flip side, USC has a massive issue with coming up with takeaways – it doesn’t do it. It’s not going to all of a sudden force Colorado to give it up five times for easy points.
The Trojan offense doesn’t have a whole lot of scoring pop, there’s no running game to worry too much about, and penalties are a big issue.
Colorado has to do what it’s done all season long. Don’t screw up, get timely big plays out of Montez, expect Laviska Shenault to continue being the best receiver in college football, and generate a whole lot of pressure. Get to JT Daniels, stop the pedestrian USC ground game, and everything will be fine.
One Reason Why USC Will Win
Sometimes, you don’t mess with a streak.
0-12. That’s what Colorado is all-time against USC, with the first loss a 46-7 drubbing in 1927, and it hasn’t gotten a whole lot better from there. A few fo the games have been close, but the Buffs are 0-7 against the Trojans in Pac-12 play.
USC has had two weeks off, and it might have come at the wrong time after coming up with two tight Pac-12 wins. Really, it was a great break for a team full of a slew of little issues – it should be fresh and ready for an interesting and manageable back half of the slate.
Daniels is still making a few true freshman mistakes, but in general, he’s doing just fine. He also got a whole lot of help against Arizona with the emergence of Aca’Cedric White, a senior who busted out with a stunning 173-yard, two-score rushing day.
If USC can finally crank up a consistent running game, and if the defense can get its legs enough to start finally forcing a few takeaways, all of a sudden, this disappointing season can turn into another Pac-12 South title run.
First, the Trojans have to win this.
What’s Going To Happen
Do … not … mess … with … a … streak.
Sometimes a Kentucky does beat a Florida. Streaks do get broken, and if that happens, just tip your cap and move along.
Of course the 1927 Colorado loss to USC has nothing to do with how good the teams are right now. However, the Buffs are getting a team with two weeks off to prepare for them – and with few questions about whether or not its focused.
Montez will be fantastic, and he’ll come up with a huge day, but the USC offensive line will pull off one of its best games of the season. It’ll play like it did in the opening drive in the win over Washington State, but it’ll keep up the intensity for an entire game.
It might not be anything pretty, but Daniels will be good enough, the defense will come up with just enough key stops as the excellent linebackers keep Montez in the pocket time and again, and the streak goes on.
