Because we haven’t done THIS enough …

UCF is right – the system doesn’t work.

It sucks that you can do everything right, and it still doesn’t matter.

It all needs to be changed so that every college football program from Alabama down to UTEP can come into a season with a shot at getting into the College Football Playoff. So, to throw this out there for yet another year …

Just expand it to eight.

I liked the idea of six for a while – give the top two teams a bye – but I’ll compromise to make this more realistic.

The playoff seedings for the eight-team tournament are announced on Sunday, December 2nd. The first round is played on the home field of the higher seeds on Saturday, December 15th. That gives everyone two weeks to rest up and prepare, and it doesn’t mess up the bowl season, which can kick off right after.

And then, the next round of the CFP is as normal with the four teams playing like they do now.

However, no more doing this just on the judgement of the panelists. The Power Five champs are automatically in, along with the top-ranked Group of Five champion, and two wild-cards.

There’s your Notre Dame spot if needed, and there’s your safety net in case an Alabama of last year doesn’t get into the conference title game. It’s then up to the College Football Playoff committee to rank the teams to get those two wild cards along with the best Group of Five champion.

Everyone would be happy, and no one left out would have a reasonable complaint.

So how would this have worked?

2017 First Round
8. UCF at 1. Clemson
7. USC at 2. Oklahoma
6. Wisconsin at 3. Georgia
5. Ohio State at 4. Alabama
First Two Left Out: Auburn, Penn State

2016 First Round
8. Western Michigan at 1. Alabama
7. Oklahoma at 2. Clemson
6. Michigan at 3. Ohio State
5. Penn State at 4. Washington
First Two Left Out: Wisconsin, USC

2015 First Round
8. Houston at 1. Clemson
7. Ohio State at 2. Alabama
6. Stanford at 3. Michigan State
5. Iowa at 4. Oklahoma
First Two Left Out: Notre Dame, Florida State

2014 First Round
8. Boise State at 1. Alabama
7. Mississippi State at 2. Oregon
6. TCU at 3. Florida State
5. Baylor at 4. Ohio State
First Two Left Out: Michigan State, Ole Miss

And even though we still have several weeks to go, what would be the best guess right now for how this would play out this season?
