Cincinnati (6-1) vs. SMU (3-4) Game Preview
What’s Going To Happen
It’s a bit of a stretch to say that the loser is out of the American Athletic title race, but Cincinnati is in big, big trouble if it doesn’t pull this off.
The Bearcats lost their first game of the year in a heartbreaker to Temple, and now they have a whole lot of traffic up in the top of the East standings.
The defense is still a killer, the offense is efficient enough to be fine, and there’s still time to get right back in it with UCF and USF still to play.
SMU lost to UCF a few weeks ago, but it’s 3-1 in the West with Houston making the trip up the road to Gerald J. Ford next week. The running game isn’t there, but the passing attack is fine and the team is great at winning the turnover battle.
But it needs to throw to win, and it won’t be able to do that against the Bearcats.
The UC D broke down a bit late in the loss to Temple, but Anthony Russo only completed 48% of his passes and threw three picks. And that’s the theme so far.
Throwing on this group has been impossible at times – no one has hit the 50% mark in any of the last five games. The Bearcats will control the clock and bounce back from last week’s disappointment with a sharp game on both sides of the ball.
SMU just won’t be able to keep things consistently moving on this D.
