What’s Going To Happen
Just when Charlotte was about to try to make a move after a 40-14 shellacking of WKU, it loses QB Chris Reynolds for the season with an ankle injury.
Meanwhile, Middle Tennessee QB Brent Stockstill missed a chunk of the loss to FIU with his own leg injury. It’s not as serious as what Reynolds dealt with, but he’s not quite right. Backup Asher O’Hara is a good runner, but he struggle throwing the ball when needed in the 24-21 defeat.
For the 49ers, this is where former Miami transfer Evan Sherriffs comes in. When he took over for Reynolds, he connected on 5-of-7 passes and kept the O moving.
Middle Tennessee hasn’t been able to get the season going, mostly because the defense can’t come up with third down stops with a secondary that’s giving up yards in chunks.
Charlotte is great against the run, and mostly, it’s amazing at controlling the clock and the tempo by moving the chains. Reynolds might have been the team’s best quarterback, but even on the road, Sherriffs will be okay, and the Blue Raider offense won’t get the explosion it needs.
Even so, overall, the Blue Raiders are better. Sherriffs will do a nice job with the offense, but it won’t be enough. There will be too many empty drives as Middle Tennessee survives an uggo.
