Auburn (4-1) vs. Mississippi State (3-2) Game Preview
One Reason Why Auburn Will Win
Mississippi State picked the wrong time for a power outage.
The Bulldogs ripped through Kansas State – who turned out to be bad – and had no problems with Stephen F. Austin and Louisiana, but at soon as it hit SEC play?
Pffffffffffffft. The air went out of the balloon.
The MSU ground attack was stuffed by Kentucky and was held to just 104 yards against Florida, scoring a combined 13 points in two games.
And now it has to go up against a dominant Auburn run defense that’s giving. up 93 yards per game.
The whole idea behind the Joe Moorhead offense was to have an explosive ground attack, and then make up for its shortcomings here and there with an equally dangerous passing offense. But that didn’t go anywhere against UK and UF, either.
Against an O line that’s having a few problems in pass protection – and again, isn’t doing anything against the good defensive lines – the phenomenal Tiger defensive front should dominate.
One Reason Why Mississippi State Will Win
This is a weird Auburn team.
The running game isn’t all that great. Jarrett Stidham isn’t playing like an NFL starter, scoring points have been like pulling teeth for a while, and there’s been way too much of a reliance on the defensive side.
If the Bulldogs can somehow break out and get up early, all of a sudden, Auburn will have to work a little bit. For an offense that scored 34 points against Arkansas and failed to get more than 24 against any other FBS team,
MSU won’t hurt itself – there are only three turnovers so far – and while it’s not as good as Auburn’s line, the defensive front is more than good enough to keep the middling Tiger ground game under wraps.
What’s Going To Happen
Auburn might be sputtering and coughing a little bit, but it’s still one LSU field goal away from being unbeaten.
Mississippi State hasn’t proven it can get the offense going against a good defense, and Auburn has a great D. It’s not going to be the complete disaster that it was over the last two weeks, but the Bulldog O isn’t going to get things going enough to overcome a good-enough game from the Tigers.
Expect a low scoring fight between two teams with way too much talent to come up with a low scoring fight.
