Appalachian State (5-1) vs. Georgia Southern (6-1) Game Preview
What’s Going To Happen
This isn’t Georgia-Florida, but it’s about as interesting a conference game as there is this weekend.
Okay you two … let’s go.
Troy did its part to roll by South Alabama on Tuesday night to go 4-0 in the East, and now it’s up to the Eagles and Mountaineers to see who wants to keep up.
Both have been sensational.
Georgia Southern lost to Clemson, Appalachian State lost to Penn State. Those have been the only blips, and for the winner of this, there might not be another misfire as it pushes on for a possible New Year’s Six bowl spot.
Georgia Southern is back to cranking up the amazing rushing offense again, rolling for 295 yards or more in every game but the loss in Death Valley, and in a strange performance against Texas State.
Shai Werts is throwing just well enough to hit a few passes to cross up defenses, and he has yet to throw a pick. He’s only thrown for 491 yards so far, and he’s not hitting the home runs for touchdowns, but he’ll keep things moving. He leads the ground game that’s averaging 275 yards per game.
Appalachian State is averaging 265.
With star RB Jalin Moore out, Darrynton Evans stepped up for the Mountaineers and took over the attack, running for 183 yards against Louisiana, and ripping through Arkansas State for 115. But this game is about the ASU linebackers.
Akeem Davis-Gaither is great in the open field, and Anthony Flory and Jordan Fehr have been through the battles to know what they’re about to deal with.
Last year, the Mountaineers held the Eagles to just 111 yards in a 27-6 win, but this year’s version of GSU is far stronger.
ASU’s lines will take over the game, the offensive balance will overcome the big day from Werts, and the winning streak will continue. The Mountaineers will survive on the road in what might turn out to be the Sun Belt title game.
