West Virginia (1-0) vs. Youngstown State (0-1) Game Preview
One Reason Why Youngstown State Will Win
This is a better Penguin team than it showed in the collapse to Butler – giving up 16 fourth quarter points in the 23-21 loss.
The offensive line is good enough in pass protection to give Montgomery VanGorder time to get the passing game going, and at the very least, there should be success on several short-to-midrange throws.
The Mountaineers might have rolled past Tennessee, but it also allowed Jarrett Guarantano to hit 19-of-25 passes. They didn’t go anywhere, but Tennessee’s offense wasn’t shut down cold.
One Reason Why West Virginia Will Win
The machine shouldn’t have a problem cranking it back up.
Butler was able to throw for 253 yards on the Youngstown State secondary, helped partly because the pass rush didn’t generate enough pressure.
Will Grier threw for 429 yards and five touchdowns against a jacked up Tennessee D that managed just two sacks. If all goes according to plan, Grier and company should get up fast in the first quarter and let the running game do the work.
He’ll have time to spread the ball around, and like the Tennessee win, the targets will come through.
What’s Going To Happen
Youngstown State is going to bring a better effort and make this more of a game than Mountaineer fans might like.
Grier and the WVU offense will be too good, but it will take just a little while to get going. The Penguins will come out with a major attitude after the way the Butler game ended, they’ll hang around throw for throw, and they’ll make everyone sweat.
And then the WVU scoring run will come in the third and everyone will exhale.
