Washington State (1-0) vs. San Jose State (0-1) Game Preview
One Reason Why San Jose State Will Win
It wasn’t fun.
San Jose State can’t lose to FCS teams, but it couldn’t stop UC Davis in a 44-38 loss. But the offense did its part.
The 12 penalties and three turnovers were killers, but the passing game cranked it up with Montel Aaron stepping in and bombing away for 254 yards and two scores, and that came after Josh Love threw for 109 yards. Love struggled, but the passing production was there.
Washington State might have come up big in its opener, but under Mike Leach, the program has a way of fizzling from time to time. Two years ago it lost to Eastern Washington, and in 2015 the Cougars lost to Portland State. Can the Spartans bomb away and catch Wazzu napping?
At least the passing attack will be there.
One Reason Why Washington State Will Win
The UC Davis passing game crushed the Spartan secondary, throwing for 446 yards and three scores, going big early and doing just enough late to pull off the win.
The Washington State air show should be able to do whatever it wants to.
Wyoming has a fantastic defense with a loaded secondary, and Gardner Minshew threw against it at will. There weren’t many big plays, but he threw 57 times for 319 yards and three scores, coming through great late helping the Cougars to a 21-point fourth quarter.
Now he’s about to load up the passing stats on the porous Spartan secondary. The goal, though, will be to get the running game going a bit – just to show that it can.
UC Davis ran well on the SJSU defensive front, too.
What’s Going To Happen
There won’t be any letdown at home.
It’ll be an emotionally-charged atmosphere, and the Cougars are going to come out hot. Minshew will be fantastic from the first drive throughout the opening half, but it’ll be the running game that takes over as the game goes on.
The Spartans will get a few nice moments and some points, but they won’t come until late. The Cougar defensive front will live behind the SJSU line.
