Wake Forest (2-2) vs. Rice (1-3) Game Preview
One Reason Why Rice Will Win
The record might not show it, but Rice really is playing far better this season under new head coach Mike Bloomgren.
The offense can’t quite establish its running game identity, but it’s able to dominate the time of possession battle, the offensive line hasn’t been a disaster, and there aren’t a whole lot of big mistakes and penalties.
The Wake Forest offense is having a problem with turnovers, giving it away eight times so far with six interceptions. To have a shot, the Owl defense has to force a few mistakes and take advantage of every one of them.
Meanwhile, the offense has to slow this game to a crawl – it has to hold on to the ball for close to 40 minutes, if possible.
One Reason Why Wake Forest Will Win
The Owl secondary has had a nightmare of a start.
If Wake Forest wants to get the passing game going, this is the week to do it against a Rice pass defense that’s been blistered over the last three games. Houston, Hawaii and Southern Miss combined for well over 1,000 yards with 11 touchdowns and just one pick – the Owls haven’t been close.
Yeah, Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman has had a difficult time throwing picks, but that shouldn’t be an issue this week. If all goes right, this is the game to get formerly suspended starter Kendall Hinton back into the fold – he ran for a 23-yard touchdown last week in the loss to Notre Dame.
Rice doesn’t have enough of a pass rush to disturb the quick Demon Deacon offense, and it’s not going to get behind the line enough to be an issue. It doesn’t matter if Rice controls the tempo; Wake Forest should be able to score in a hurry.
What’s Going To Happen
Wake Forest will bounce back quickly from the Notre Dame debacle to rip through Rice with a quick and easy blowout win. The Demon Deacons will get up fast, and the scoring will keep on coming with Hinton getting more of a shot as the game goes on.
