Virginia (1-1) vs. Ohio (1-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Ohio Will Win
As good as Virginia QB Bryce Perkins has been so far, the passing game isn’t anything amazing yet. To be fair, he had to deal with the rain against Indiana, but he only threw for 106 yards for a passing attack that didn’t do much against Richmond, either.
The bigger concern will be a Cavalier run defense that was great against Richmond, but couldn’t handle the Hoosiers last week. The pass rush hasn’t been great, and the big plays defensively haven’t been there quite yet.
Ohio has the ability to grind it out on the ground a bit depending on who it uses at quarterback – it’s possible to move the chains on the Cavalier D. With two weeks to prepare, the Bobcats should be ready. But …
One Reason Why Virginia Will Win
The Bobcat offense was really, really shaky at times in the too-close opener against Howard.
Yeah, it’s possible to come up with third down conversions against the Virginia defense, but Ohio couldn’t do that two weeks ago, converting just 27% of its tries.
Yeah, the Virginia passing game hasn’t been great. but Howard’s Caylin Newton went off on the Bobcat secondary. This might be the game to air it out.
Again, blow off a lot what happened last week against Indiana because of the weather. Virginia should be much sharper, much more balanced, and the running game should be able to take control early on.
What’s Going To Happen
Will the changed venue to Vanderbilt Stadium make a difference? It might make things weird for Virginia, but it’ll still perform just fine.
Ohio has an interesting quarterback situation. Nathan Rourke didn’t play much in the opener, with Quinton Maxwell taking over the reins. Virginia will have to prepare for both options, but that shouldn’t matter too much.
The Bobcat attack will be far better and sharper than it was against Howard, but the Cavalier defense will rise up in the second half, Perkins will be a handful, and Virginia will with right the ship after last week’s loss.
