One Reason Why Old Dominion Will Win
A painfully overmatched East Carolina team managed to shock the college football world two weeks ago when East Carolina came into town. Can this be the Virginia version of that?
That’s a stretch – duh – but this is a desperate Old Dominion team that’s a a whole lot better than it looked so far. The offensive line has done a decent job of keeping defenses out of the backfield, and the team isn’t screwing up, keeping the penalties and giveaways to a minimum.
Yes, Virginia Tech has been terrific so far, but it missed out on last week’s tune-up game against East Carolina because of the hurricane, and as it turns out, beating Florida State is absolutely no big whoop.
Is it possible the Hokies just aren’t as good as they’re being given credit for?
One Reason Why Virginia Tech Will Win
Old Dominion has been awful.
It should be 3-0, but it got blown away by Liberty, lost at home to FIU, and couldn’t get by a mediocre Charlotte team last week.
The offense is the worst in Conference USA at converting on third downs, the worst in total defense, the running game isn’t working, and there’s no pass rush. Besides that, everything is going great.
Virginia Tech’s defensive front should rip through the Monarch offensive front and force a slew of big mistakes. In just two games, it has six sacks and 23 tackles for loss. The Hokies D will camp out in the ODU backfield all game long.

What’s Going To Happen
The rested and ready Hokies aren’t going to have much of a problem.
The defense will slow down the Monarchs from the start, and the passing game isn’t going to be strong enough to mount much of a comeback.
Virginia Tech’s offense will run at will, get up early, and coast from there, saving the main men for the ACC opener against Duke. The Hokies will take their foot off the gas late.
