Utah (2-1) vs. Washington State (3-1) Game Preview
One Reason Why Utah Will Win
The Utes lead the nation in total and scoring defense – even with the Washington game out of the way – and now they’ve had two weeks off to rest up.
Best of all against a team like Washington State, Utah leads the nation in passing efficiency defense.
Weber State and Northern Illinois aren’t exactly Texas Tech when it comes to winging the ball around the yard, but Jake Browning is good, and he only threw for 155 yards against Ute D.
As good as Washington State’s offense has been, it’s awful on third downs, and helped by big plays behind the line, the Utes are great at getting their defense off the field. But …
One Reason Why Washington State Will Win
Yeah, Utah can play some D, but it hasn’t seen anything like this.
Wazzu ran into a desperate USC team in the 39-36 loss in Los Angeles, but Gardner Minshew and the passing game worked.
Amazing so far, he’s hitting 71% of his passes for 1,547 yards and 11 scores with three picks, hitting the 300-yard mark in each of his four games.
Utah’s offense doesn’t have the pop to keep up the pace.
As much attention as the Wazzu offense might receive, the D can play a little, too, especially up front.
The Utah passing attack hasn’t taken up like it was supposed to, and the ground game isn’t quite nasty enough to pick up the slack, It has yet to allow over 150 rushing yards and is only giving up 3.2 yards per carry.
USC came into last week’s game with an attitude, and rumbled down the field with its ground attack on the first drive. And that was about it.
This Washington State defense might gibe up points, but it’s the real deal.
What’s Going To Happen
This will be more of a defensive battle than it might appear. The Utah offense hasn’t been able to get going, but the D is strong enough to keep Minshew and company from going off.
Utah’s turnover margin issues are going to play a role. It’ll give the ball up three times, and the Cougars will take advantage of all the mistakes.
