USC (1-1) vs. Texas (1-1) Game Preview

Okay, you two. Just be interesting.

No one cares about the Vince Young game anymore. No one cares that that these two programs are supposed to be amazing. On a weekend when a hurricane is dominating the nation’s attention, and there are aren’t a whole lot of interesting games, don’t boring. You’re boring. Quit boring everyone.

Stanford’s defense had a whole lot to do with the total dud of a 17-3 Cardinal win over USC, but the defending Pac-12 champ is supposed to be a whole lot better than this.

Texas – despite what a whole lot of silly people might have tried to tell you – is undergoing a rebuilding gig, but that doesn’t excuse the faceplant loss to Maryland and the lackluster response of a win over Tulsa.

You’re USC and Texas. Start acting and playing like it.

One Reason Why USC Will Win

Besides being not all that great at college football right now, what’s the biggest problem with Texas so far?

There needs to be more offensively.

There’s no pass rush, there aren’t enough plays in the backfield, the Michael Dickson-less punting game stinks, the coverage teams aren’t great, there are too many penalties … but right now, it’s about the offense.

QB Sam Ehlinger has been okay, and he hit 78% of his throws against Tulsa, but the offense couldn’t keep its foot on the gas.

The running game has been whatever, there have been too many misfires in the red zone, and the O is only converting 30% of its third down tries. But …

One Reason Why Texas Will Win

Besides being not all that great at college football right now, what’s the biggest problem with USC so far?

There needs to be more offensively.

The pass rush hasn’t been as good as expected, there aren’t enough plays in the backfield, the punting game stinks, the coverage teams aren’t great, the run D has been a dud … but right now, it’s about the offense.

Wunderkind QB JT Daniels hasn’t done much of anything, and now he has a banged up hand. The running game has been fine when Aca’Cedric Ware and Stephen Carr can get going, but it hasn’t been enough of a differentiating factor.

The Trojan offense hasn’t shown enough explosion so far, and with a run defense that’s getting hammered for 6.5 yards per carry, Texas needs to get that O line in a lather and start to own the clock and the tempo.

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams have been equally underwhelming, but this week, the USC defense will rise up and make up for its mediocre start. The offense won’t suddenly be the 2005 version, but it’ll start to play with a better tempo and better flow after being too sleepy against Stanford.

Texas will do a whole lot of nice things, but it won’t do them for a full four quarters.

The USC offense will hit its third down chances. The Texas offense won’t. That will matter late.
