UCLA (0-3) vs. Colorado (3-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why UCLA Will Win
This team really, really needed two weeks off.
The offense has been a massive disappointment, and the defense hasn’t been able to pick up the slack. But there really are enough pieces in place to start to get something going – even with the criticisms from the dad of QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson.
But for the offense to start doing something meaningful, it’s going to need a little help. The defense has to start being a factor, and it has to start getting into the backfield.
Colorado’s offensive line hasn’t been bad – the running game has been solid – but there’s been a problem keeping defenses out of the backfield. UCLA’s defensive front hasn’t been able to generate much of a push, but this has to be the game to do it.
This has to be what the last two weeks off have produced. However …
One Reason Why Colorado Will Win
The lines continue to be the problem.
For all of the weeping and gnashing of teeth over the Bruins and their miserable start, there’s not a whole lot Chip Kelly could do to get more talented in the trenches.
The D line hasn’t been a total disaster, but the offensive front isn’t doing much of anything to help the cause. It’s awful in pass protections and the running game continues to sputter and cough.
Colorado’s defense leads the Pac-12 in sacks and tackles for loss per game – that should be enough to stall the UCLA offense to a dead stop.
What’s Going To Happen
Welcome to Steven Montez on national TV.
The nation’s most underappreciated passer, all he has done is lead Colorado to a 3-0 start by completing 74% of his passes for 855 yards and eight touchdowns and two picks. He’ll be on from the start.
UCLA will play better for a while, and then the lines will break down. This is Colorado’s chance to show off a little bit at home, and it’s about to put on a great performance.
This might just be the best team in the Pac-12 South, and it’s going to show it.
