UCF (3-0) vs. Pitt (2-2) Game Preview
One Reason Why Pitt Will Win
This program has a way of rising up and coming with something spicy when no one is expecting much.
It was able to give Miami its first loss of last year, it beat eventual Big Ten champ Penn State early on 2016, and almost knocked eventual national champion Clemson out of the College Football Playoff in a wild 43-42 loss.
Can the Panthers hand the defending national champs a loss their first loss since the end of the 2016 season?
This is where the Pitt running game has to take over early on. It managed 228 yards or more in three of the four games, with a season-high 245 against Penn State and six touchdowns in the last two outings.
UCF has yet to play anyone – sorry, UConn and Florida Atlantic – and yet it’s having problems against the run. The Knights will get into the backfield, but if Pitt is able to start pounding right away, it should be able to own the clock and the tempo.
One Reason Why UCF Will Win
If the Pitt defense that showed up at North Carolina makes the trip to Orlando, it’s uh oh time.
The Tar Heel offense struggled for the first few games with its passing game, and then it went off, with Nathan Elliott hitting 71% of its passes for 313 yards and two scores.
Pitt, meet McKenzie Milton.
The machine hasn’t slowed down. Milton might have thrown three picks in a scrimmage against South Carolina State, but he’s still bombing away for an offense that leads the nation in third down conversion percentage.
Let the UCF offense be the UCF offense, and then expect the defense to take the ball away. This might not be a rock of a Knight D, but it’s great at getting behind the line, and it’s a mashing at forcing mistakes with nine takeaways – seven of them picks- in the first three games.
What’s Going To Happen
Pitt will bounce back from the North Carolina debacle and …
It’s not going to be enough.
This isn’t as strong UCF team as last year’s version, and but this is its one chance at facing a Power Fiver until the bowl season – it’s going to make a massive statement.
With Milton sharp from the start, and a big early offensive explosion, the Knights will rise up at home with a brilliant offensive performance as they moon the college football establishment.
