Texas (3-1) vs. Kansas State (2-2) Game Preview
One Reason Why Texas Will Win
It’s just not working.
Kansas State has been one of the stunning disappointments so far this season without an offense that’s able to keep the chains moving and a defense that can’t stop anyone on the key downs.
There’s no consistency against the decent teams, mostly because the line play hasn’t been good enough.
The Wildcats are dead last in college football in tackles for loss, and they’re last in the Big 12 in sacks. On the other side, they’re having a nightmare of a time keeping defenses out of the backfield.
Other than that, things are going great.
It might not be dominant, but the Texas passing game has been consistent enough to get by. Sam Ehlinger has thrown for over 220 yards in the first four games with two scores in every one. Best of all durning the three-game winning streak, he hasn’t thrown a pick.
Meanwhile the defense has tightened up, giving up just 14 points to USC and 16 to TCU. Considering the Kansas State offense is having a hard time generating points, getting to 20 points against the Longhorn D is going to be a fight, but …
One Reason Why Kansas State Will Win
The Texas offensive line isn’t doing anything amazing.
The passing game is fine with Ehlinger finding his groove, but the ground attack is sputtering outside of the decent performance against a bad Tulsa team.
The Kansas State defensive line could use the break.
The Texas defense isn’t generating any pressure with the pass rush, and the secondary hasn’t been anything special.
The Wildcats are way overdue for a strong performance, especially at home. The veteran skill parts are there, and there are enough explosive options to start expecting a few more big plays. But the line has to start playing better.
This week at home, Kansas State has to be Kansas State. It has to control the clock, and it needs to start pounding the ball a bit. This is the season-changing moment after a rocky start. At home, it needs to come up with something special.
What’s Going To Happen
Kansas State won’t come up with something special.
It’ll be okay, and it’ll get out to an early lead, but the Texas defense will come up with stop after stop in the second half. Ehlinger and the Longhorn offense won’t be anything amazing, but it’ll go on two key scoring drives needed to get out with a win and keep the hot streak going.
It still won’t be fun and exciting like West Virginia, Oklahoma or Texas Tech, but there’s nothing boring about winning four straight after the rough start vs. Maryland.
