Texas Tech (2-1) vs. Oklahoma State (3-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Texas Tech Will Win
Now there’s the passing game.
It was fine in the loss to Ole Miss, and it rocked against Lamar, but the explosion against Houston is when this all kicked in.
Alan Bowman blew up for 605 yards and five scores, connecting on 75% of his passes in the offensive explosion in the 63-49 win. Now, even though the Red Raider defense just isn’t going to show up, the offense can handle the heavy lifting.
Oklahoma State might have flexed its muscle last week against Boise State, but the secondary got lit up for 380 yards and three scores. It was the first time all year anyone tried to go after the Cowboy defensive backs, and now comes Bowman.
The Red Raiders will get theirs, but …
One Reason Why Oklahoma State Will Win
The Texas Tech defense really isn’t going to do its part this season.
The overall stats are skewed because Lamar can’t throw, but Ole Miss and Houston combined for 798 yards and five scores with no picks. Oklahoma State’s Taylor Cornelius was just okay against Boise State, but he’s getting the job done – and now he’s getting more help.
Cornelius ran for two touchdowns last week, but now it’s about time for Justice Hill to kick it all in. Rested for the first two weeks, he ran for 123 yards and a score on just 15 carries against the Broncos. Last year he tore through Texas Tech for 164 yards – and he’s about to go off again.
The Cowboy offense is a machine with balance and explosion.
On the other side of the ball, the Cowboy pass rush is the best in the country with a nation-leading 16 sacks including seven last week. It won’t get to Bowman too often – the Texas Tech O gets the ball out of the quarterback hands in a hurry – but it’ll pressure him.
What’s Going To Happen
Oklahoma State is the real deal. The offense might not be the killer that the 2017 version was, but it hasn’t hit its stride quite yet.
With the defense doing just enough, and the offense finding its balance, this is one of the nation’s under-the-radar teams, and it’s about to show it again. It’ll be a shootout, but the Cowboys will have more when they need it.
