Tennessee (1-1) vs. UTEP (0-2) Game Preview
One Reason Why UTEP Will Win
Tennessee was able to rip apart East Tennessee State … oooooh.
The offense still isn’t getting much of anything out of its line – it’s possible to get into the backfield on a regular basis against this group – and the Miners have to sell out to try getting to QB Jarrett Guarantano.
Even against ETSU with everything worked, the offense still struggled on third downs and it still showed there’s plenty of work to do. At least, it showed that while scoring 59 points against a vastly inferior team. To stay in this UTEP needs the Vols to sputter and struggle. They need to screw up.
Tennessee can’t take anything or anyone for granted, but with Florida coming up next week, it’s going to be looking ahead – most likely.
Yeah, the Vols might be having a few issues to get 2018 rolling, but …
One Reason Why Tennessee Will Win
UTEP isn’t doing much of anything right.
Winless last year, it’s struggling under new head man Dana Dimel, getting rocked by Northern Arizona and UNLV by a combined score of 82 to 34. The passing game is among the nation’s least efficient, the offense can’t get much going, and worst of all, the turnover issues have been a killer – UTEP is -5 so far in just two games.
The Miner passing game has to do something, anything, to get the passing game going, and that would require completing a few passes. The Miner quarterbacks are only hitting 43% of their chances.
Yes, it’s possible to get into the Tennessee backfield, but UTEP doesn’t have the defensive front to do it. There’s no pass rush, little pressure, and the D isn’t forcing enough big mistakes.
What’s Going To Happen
Tennessee’s offense is going to have some fun again, even if it’s not always smooth.
Jarrett Guarantano was able to get the ball down the field a bit against ETSU, and the running game was okay, but it’ll be the defense that looks fantastic. The secondary didn’t allow the Buccaneers to complete much of anything, and the same will happen against the putrid UTEP passing game.
