TCU (2-1) vs. Texas (2-1) Game Preview
One Reason Why TCU Will Win
The TCU receivers should be able to go off on the Texas secondary.
It’s still a rebuilding unit that’s not getting a whole lot of help from a mediocre pass rush, and it showed last week when the Longhorns were hit with 322 yards.
For all of the problems at USC, JT Daniels hit 63% of his passes. Kasim Hill connected on 62% of his throws in Maryland’s win in the opener. So far, TCU QB Shawn Robinson has been terrific, throwing for 308 yards against Ohio State and completing 61% of his throws so far.
The running game is good for 200 yards per outing, the passing attack can get deep, and the offense is by far the best and most explosive that Texas has faced so far.
And the Horned Frogs can play a little bit of D, too.
One Reason Why Texas Will Win
So what is Texas doing right? How was it so dominant against USC?
Did the ground game work against the Trojans? Not really. Was the passing attack great? It was fine, but stumbled a bit too much.
The run defense stepped it up.
It gave up two scores, but it lived in the backfield with three sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss, keeping the Trojans to -5 yards on the ground. The Longhorns turned it loose, and now they have to do it again.
TCU might be great in pass protection so far, but it’ll give up plays behind the line. All of a sudden, the Texas D is playing with more fight and more confidence – at least in terms of optics.
Grind out the clock, convert third downs, and get into the backfield – that formula might be enough to pull off the win.
What’s Going To Happen
Is this when Texas really and truly turns its season and the Tom Herman era up a few notches? Blowing away USC was nice, but the Trojan offense isn’t any good.
The TCU offense can move.
The Horned Frogs will get over the Ohio State loss in a hurry, will be crisp with a balanced offense, and will get one big play from the special teams to come up with the big win in Austin.
