TCU (1-0) vs. SMU (0-1) Game Preview
There weren’t any problems for TCU in the Week 1 55-7 opener against Southern, but SMU had a tough go in a 46-23 blowout loss to North Texas in the Sonny Dykes debut.
This might be a big local battle with plenty of interest – especially from those pining for the old school Southwest Conference days – but both have massive Big Ten fish to fry next week. SMU has to go to Michigan, and TCU brings in the Urban-less Ohio State team.
TCU won 56-36 last season, have won six in a row in the series, and took away 16 of the last 18.
One Reason Why TCU Will Win
The SMU defense was non-existent for three quarters against North Texas, and the offense failed to show up, either.
The Mean Green got up 36-0 going into the fourth quarter, with the secondary rocked for 444 yards and the offense only able to managed four yards on the ground and 256 in all.
The big problem? The offensive line was a complete and utter disaster, allowing nine sacks and not giving QB Ben Hicks a moment to breathe. TCU didn’t unleash the hounds on poor Southern in the opener, but the defensive front won’t have any problems making things happen behind the line.
After getting nicely tuned up with a three-touchdown day, TCU QB Shawn Robinson should hit 300 yards without breathing hard.
One Reason Why SMU Will Win
The SMU offense has to throw and keep throwing.
Granted, that doesn’t work if Hicks doesn’t have time, but the pieces are there to put up big numbers if he can find any sort of a groove.
RB Braeden West did some nice things against North Texas – scoring on a long touchdown on a grab, and with one on the ground – but the game was well out of reach.
James Proche is a good weapon, and Hicks is a proven passer who can produce if given the chance. If TCU is looking ahead to the Buckeyes, there’s a shot the Mustangs can bomb away – or in this offense, dink and dunk away – and catch the Horned Frogs in a shootout.
What’s Going To Happen
TCU will get up fast and won’t lose the intensity after a big first half.
For the second straight week, the Horned Frog offense will be balanced, Robinson will be sharp, and the defensive front will own the Mustang ground game.
Be shocked if SMU hits 50 rushing yards. It’s going to try throwing and keep throwing, but TCU secondary will win more than enough battles to put this Friday night fight away in a hurry.
