2. Duke Blue Devils
This isn’t actually that big a shocker.
We picked Duke to have a big year – patting self on back to offset the preseason belief that UCLA would be good – but it’s really happening. The team is really that good.
Beating Army by 20 looks a whole lot better know after what the Knights almost did to Oklahoma.
Northwestern wasn’t all that great, but after getting down 7-0, that was a total wipeout in a 21-7 win. But the offense lost QB Daniel Jones … and then it hung up 40 on the road against a Baylor team that’ll probably go bowling. Throw in the paycheck game against North Carolina Central, and it’s been a phenomenal start.
But Duke went 4-0 last year, too, before dropping six in a row and needing to rally late just to get to a bowl game. And now the ACC season kicks in.
Virginia Tech is up next, and then the Blue Devils have to go on the road for three games in four weeks – and that doesn’t even include the trip to Clemson in mid-November.
The lines are playing well, the running game is working, and there aren’t a lot of mistakes on either side of the ball. Throw in the terrific coaching and the mediocre year in the ACC, and this could be fun.
As the only unbeaten team left in the Coastal, the Blue Devils will be a factor.
