Stanford (4-0) vs. Notre Dame (4-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Stanford Will Win
Now Stanford knows it has to deal with Ian Book.
It’s not like Wake Forest was going to beat the Irish if it had time to prepare, but now, the Cardinal coaching staff knows what it’s in for – there’s no surpassing anyone by starting the passing quarterback.
Stanford needs to turn the defense loose on Book and get into the backfield. With 13 sacks on the year, and four or more in each of the three games against the FBS teams on the slate – San Diego State, USC and Oregon – it’s working. This group knows how to get to the quarterback.
On the other side, the Irish are coming off their worst game against the run. They stuffed Michigan, and were fine against Vanderbilt, but Wake Forest was able to get going for 259 yards. Bryce Love hasn’t been bad so far, but he has yet to go off.
Hitting the 100-yard mark for the third year in a row against the Irish would be good enough.
One Reason Why Notre Dame Will Win
Ian Book isn’t a first round NFL draft prospect like Herbert is, but now Notre Dame has its quarterback.
Oregon might have collapsed last week against Stanford, but before the overtime problems, Herbert completed 25-of-27 passes. He finished 26-of-33 for 346 yards with a touchdown.
Last week against Wake Forest, Book completed 25-of-34 passes for 325 yards and two scores. He was pushing the ball down the field a bit, and finally, the Irish offense started to open it up.
Along with the emergence of Book, the Irish get back Dexter Williams, their most explosive running back. He’s fresh, ready, and he might be just good enough right away to hit the one home run needed.
What’s Going To Happen
Both teams are battle-tested, and both teams know how to fight through tight moments. But Notre Dame is peaking at just the right time.
Now it has its offense starting to kick in. With Book in place, and with Brandon Wimbush still there to see some work, the quarterback situation is improved. If Williams can add anything right away to the ground game, look out.
However, Stanford is a stone-cold machine.
The team found a way to get by San Diego State when Love was stuffed, and the D shut down USC to a dead stop. It’s going to frustrate the Irish O, but the Notre Dame defense will rise up when needed – the secondary is about to get pushed and pushed hard – to pull off a thriller in the final moments.
