South Carolina (1-1) vs. Marshall (2-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Marshall Will Win
The passing game is coming through when it has to.
The defense is coming off a five-takeaway game in the win over Eastern Kentucky, and the run D has been a rock so far, but it’s the passing attack that’s led to the 2-0 start.
For all the excitement over transfer Alex Thomson, he’s been a bit banged up, and Isaiah Green has turned into the playmaker for the offense, throwing for 550 yards and five scores in the first two games.
So far, the South Carolina secondary isn’t giving up a ton of yards, but it’s giving up lots and lots and lots of completions. Coastal Carolina and Georgia quarterbacks combined to connect on 78% of their passes, and Green should be able to do his part to keep it all going.
The Herd don’t have much of a running game, but as long as they can dink and dunk all game long, they’ll keep things moving.
One Reason Why South Carolina Will Win
The Marshall special teams have been an issue.
From blocked kicks, to struggles with the coverage teams, to lousy return games, it hasn’t been a great start in the third phase. The South Carolina special teams haven’t done much, but there are weapons.
Yes, the Gamecock secondary is allowing way too many completed passes, but for the most part, they’re not going anywhere. Marshall doesn’t have much of a ground game. Assume USC is able to keep the yards after the catch to a minimum, and the run D will allow under four yards per carry.
What’s Going To Happen
Florence might have something to say about this game.
If it goes on as planned – and there isn’t a nightmare hurricane scare changing all the plans – South Carolina should be able to bounce back from the tough loss to Georgia with good game from the defense, and with the offensive line taking over to allow Jake Bentley to outplay Green.
It’s not going to be easy – especially considering the conditions – but it’ll be a tough win that comes down to the running game. South Carolina’s will be better.
