Penn State (1-0) vs. Pitt (1-0) Game Preview
One Reason Why Penn State Will Win
Penn State was better than you think against Appalachian State.
The world saw the Mountaineers make their big comeback with a 28-point fourth quarter, but go ahead and chalk that up a wee bit to Week 1 against a team that’s far better than anyone wants to give it credit for being.
The Nittany Lions were solid with the running game, and while the passing attack sputtered until Trace McSorley went Trace McSorley late, it’s going to be okay.
Pitt was terrific against Albany, but Vincent Testaverde – yeah, it’s his son – was able to hit 18-of-29 passes for 263 yards. The Nittany Lion passing game will click against the Panther secondary, and the combination of Miles Sanders and Ricky Slade should start to do even more for the ground attack, but …
One Reason Why Pitt Will Win
The Panther defensive front should get behind the line.
Yeah, it was only against Albany, but the defense showed off what it can potentially do with five sacks and constant pressure behind the line. As good as the Penn State offense was when it had to be, it wasn’t consistent against Appalachian State – until it can put together a full four quarters, assume it can’t.
Kenny Pickett looked the part hitting 16-of-22 passes for 154 yards and two scores, and while the ground game didn’t tear off too many big runs, it was effective enough to balance things out. Pitt got up early and took its foot off the gas.
Get up early again, make Penn State play with fire again – thinking it can simply come up with a big late comeback – and then clamp down when needed. This Pitt team can do that.
What’s Going To Happen
The Panthers are going to be inspired, and they’re going to give the Nittany Lions a battle, but it’ll come down to the quarterback play.
Neither running game will find a groove, and neither offense will do anything consistently well. Pickett will be good, McSorley will be better, especially on two key fourth quarter drives to put the game away.
