The Path to the College Football Playoff: Go 13-0, get in no matter what. An unbeaten Sooner team makes it in over an SEC Championship loser. However, considering the Big 12 is just okay, 12-1 doesn’t guarantee anything, even with a conference title.
What Will Happen: The Sooners will survive fights against Texas, TCU and Texas Tech away from Norman, setting up the first of two games with West Virginia – the two will play in the Big 12 Championship – on the way to a second straight trip to the CFP. However, they’ll get in at 12-1.
Oklahoma State (4-1)
The Path to the College Football Playoff: Get to 12-1, and it’s in – and here’s why. At Kansas State, Texas, at Baylor, at Oklahoma, West Virginia, at TCU. Good … luck. Get through all of that, throw in the blowout win over Boise State, and win the Big 12 Championship, and that might be way too good to ignore no matter what.
What Will Happen: This a great Cowboy team, but nope. It’s not getting through this brutal second half of the season without a second loss.
The Path to the College Football Playoff: 12-1 gets them in – most likely. The Longhorns can excuse the loss to Maryland as a Week One thing, especially with wins over USC, TCU, and if it happens, Oklahoma – probably twice – Oklahoma State, West Virginia, and the rest of the gauntlet. This would be the “hot” team, but it would be nice if there wasn’t a second SEC option to worry about.
What Will Happen: There will be another loss, either to Oklahoma next week, or on the road to Oklahoma State or Texas Tech. The home game against West Virginia will be a fight, too.
West Virginia (4-0)
The Path to the College Football Playoff: It’s not a crusher that West Virginia didn’t play NC State – cancelled because of the hurricane – but it doesn’t help. If it can get to 12-0 with two straight wins over Oklahoma to get a Big 12 title, it’s in no matter what. It can lose the first one to OU and avenge the defeat a week later and get in.
What Will Happen: The Mountaineers will drop two games along the way. They’ll get to the Big 12 Championship, but they’ll lose on the road to either Texas or Oklahoma State, and they’re not beating Oklahoma twice.
